Andreas Erbe: Introduction to corrosion
This presentation will briefly motivate and introduce the basic physical-chemical concepts needed to understand corrosion processes of metals. For a material to corrode in a certain environment, there needs to be a thermodynamic driving force for the (electro)chemical processes to occur. In a metal, the energy level of the electron is an easily accessible measure for assessing whether it is corroding. Experimentally, the corrosion potential can be measured easily, but its interpretation is prone to misunderstandings. In practice, the corrosion potential is governed by the kinetics of the involved anodic and cathodic reactions. Many materials have a heterogeneous surface, and the environment may also be heterogeneous, such that differences in corrosion potentials between different areas of a material may occur. Such differences lead to localised corrosion. Usually, corrosion phenomena are classified in corrosion forms through their macroscopic appearance. Through choosing an appropriate design, the engineer has the chance to make a structure more or less corrosion resistant. Also for the choice of appropriate protection strategies such as cathodic protection, metallic coatings or polymer coatings, with or without corrosion inhibitors, a thorough understanding of both the corrosion mechanisms and the material/chemical properties is necessary.
